What is Internal Family Systems?

“Internal Family Systems”* is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS, all parts are welcome.” -IFS Institute

Why IFS?

Bill Tierney coaching using the Internal Family Systems model

Why IFS? As a results coach, I’ve never found a more effective approach than IFS to help my clients live a life they love.

I’m a Certified Internal Family Systems Practitioner which means I have participated in training, consultation, and demonstration of my aptitude in facilitating the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model.  I have adapted what I have learned to support my clients from a coaching perspective. I don’t do therapy - I help people change their futures consciously and intentionally.

How it Works

When we try to show up the way we think we should, we lack confidence. When operating from a fabricated and polished version of ourselves, we doubt ourselves and fear being exposed. IFS helps you think, feel, and act as your authentic and innately powerful Self.

While I still use the scaffolding and structure of traditional mindset and accountability coaching, I often lean on what I have learned about our inner world of subpersonalities or “parts”.

IFS helps get to the source of disempowering beliefs. When I help my clients become consciously aware of the subpersonalities (or parts of themselves) that hold and enforce those beliefs, things begin to shift.

In most cases, disempowering beliefs started out as ideas that, at one time, offered the most logical and advantageous explanations available in our circumstances. But a belief is more like a theory than the truth. A belief is a thought that is accepted as the truth.

When a belief is disempowering, there is something about it that isn’t accurate.

What stops success are disempowering beliefs such as:

  • This is too hard

  • I am not capable of achieving this

  • I’m a fraud

  • It’s not safe to be successful

  • If I try and fail, it will hurt too much

  • I’m not worthy of success

If the beliefs behind resistance and self-sabotage can be challenged and updated, successful achievement of objectives is possible.

Combining the ability to change unconscious beliefs using mindset tools and IFS with the structure and accountability of coaching will put you on the path to the life you want.
