Surrender and Improve the Quality of Your Life
What’s been on my mind lately has been surrender, staying in the flow and the 12 Steps of recovery. Surrender and quality of life. Because of surrendering, I am experiencing the transformation of positive changes in my personal and professional life; I am also witnessing a transformation in the lives of the people I coach and work with.
Can the 12 Steps help you live a happier, more joyous and free life?
The Principles Behind the Steps
Even if you don’t have an addiction to recover from, you may find that the 12 steps of recovery can help to improve the quality of your life. This is where transformation began for me in 1982. Over the years, the impact and meaning of these 12 steps has deepened for me. The 12 steps have helped me to shift from surviving my life to feeling blessed by it. And they have helped me to become someone who can connect with and help all of my coaching clients. It’s not that I use the 12 steps in my coaching- I never have. It’s that the principles behind these steps have helped me to become someone who cares enough about people and who trusts God enough to actually make a difference in the world.
I used to think I was on my own and that I could trust no one. Now I know better. I know… better. Phew!
Step 1 – Admitting Powerlessness
Step 1 of the 12 steps is, “We admitted we were powerless (over______), that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Would you like to use the 12 steps in your life? Are you willing to let them transform you?
If so, I suggest that you get a fresh notebook and make this a project. Make a commitment to yourself. Do this as an experiment. What if taking these 12 steps could really change your life as it has mine?
Let’s get started. In your notebook, answer the following questions about step 1.
1. What does this step mean to you?
2. What are you powerless over?
3. What happens when you try to have power over that which you have no power over?”
